Former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is expected to officially announce her second run for president today. This sets the stage for a bruising election battle as she bids to become the first woman elected to the White House.

Supporters gathered in a New York on Saturday, saying they are ready to back Clinton's bid. The rally was organized by the grassroots organization "Ready for Hillary" founded two years ago. So far, it's raised over 14 million dollars.

Clinton has been a high-profile figure in American politics for more than two decades since her husband, Bill Clinton, was elected president in 1992. The former first lady is expected to be the clear Democratic frontrunner, in the race to succeed Barack Obama. She lost the nomination to Obama in a protracted battle in 2008.
