Father Charles Martin hailed from the picturesque village of Scott's Head. He was born on October 14, 1957, to Elthia Marie Martin, née Hector, and Lawrence Martin (deceased). He was the second of 12 siblings and cherished being part of a large, close-knit family. From an early age, Charles felt a deep calling to become a priest. However, before fully committing to this path, he spent three impactful years teaching, where he discovered his passion for education.

In 1979, Father Martin consciously decided to pursue his priestly vocation, entering the Regional Seminary in Trinidad. He diligently studied over the next five years and ultimately earned a Bachelor's Degree in Theology. While at the seminary, he deepened his faith and prepared for a life dedicated to serving God and others.

Growing up, family was everything to him. When his parents passed away, he did not hesitate to embrace the role of the eldest sibling, guiding and supporting his seven younger brothers and sisters with unwavering love and commitment. His dedication to family was a testament to his character and cherished values.

Upon completing his studies, he returned home, and on August 18, 1985, he was ordained to the Holy Priesthood. His first assignment was as Assistant Parish Priest at the Cathedral Parish. Over the years, he faithfully served as Parish Priest in several parishes, including St. Peter, Colihaut, La Soie in Wesley, St. John and St. Lewis, Portsmouth and St. Alphonsus Goodwill. He served for a second time at the Cathedral Parish, this time as Dean of the Cathedral, guiding his flock with wisdom and compassion. His last posting was back at St. Alphonsus parish until his passing on December 2, 2024.

Father Charles's educational pursuit did not end with his Bachelor's degree. In 2004, he attended the Urbaniana University in Rome, obtaining a Licentiate degree in Canon Law. In 2008, he was appointed Judicial Vicar of the Marriage Tribunal for the Diocese of Roseau, demonstrating his dedication to his spiritual and academic pursuits.

Continuing his quest for knowledge, Father Charles pursued further postgraduate studies and, in 2012, was honoured with a Doctorate in Canon Law. His academic achievements led him to serve as a judge of the Eastern Antilles Interdiocesan Tribunal, where his expertise and integrity were highly respected.

Despite his extensive knowledge and accomplishments, Father Martin remained a model of simplicity and humility. His ability to share God's word with wisdom and fervour endeared him to many. He showed great compassion, love, dedication, kindness, and generosity in all his interactions. In 2018, for his work in the church and, by extension, our country, Dominica, he was bestowed with the second highest award, the Sisserou Award of Honour.

Even during his final days, Father Martin stayed true to his principles, embodying his preached virtues. His legacy of humility, wisdom, and unwavering faith will continue to inspire all who know him. He was an exemplary priest and a beloved figure whose life and work have left an indelible mark on his family, friends, and community.

He is survived by his seven siblings: Vania, Lucy, Francis, Guy, Sam, Kirt and Nigel Martin.

And numerous other cherished relatives and friends.
