Hard to pin Pinard

In 2009, after one term, Ian Pinard stepped down from active politics making way for Sam Martin in the Soufriere-Scottshead-Gallion- Pointe Michel constituency.

Now constituents are wondering whether Martin is returning the favour since speculation is rife in Pointe Michel that Pinard is tipped to return to the political stage and may replace Martin. Neither Pinard nor Martin has confirmed the speculations. In fact, Pinard describes the speculation as nonsense.

"He is on the ground even more than Sam Martin, the present parliamentary representative and from information I have, he is considering a call from the people to replace Martin," a source close to the party told the SUN.

But when contacted, Pinard who remains a high ranking official of the ruling Dominica Labour Party (DLP) called the story "rumours and false."

"That's false; yes, I have a visible presence in the constituency, but I am only going to meet people as usual and helping the Government, the party and the parliamentary representative to ensure our visibility and strength in the constituency," Pinard said.

He even laughed at the idea when he was asked whether he was considering shifting places with Martin.

"As far as I know, Sam Martin is going to be the DLP candidate. I stepped down because of health reasons. I love politics and so my goal is to go out and assist people," he said obviously finding the questioning amusing.

Asked if Sam Martin had been endorsed by the constituency association, Pinard replied: "I cannot answer that, go ask Sam Martin."

We took his advice and asked Martin.

"I will very much be the candidate for the DLP at the next general elections," Martin said.

But has he received the endorsement from the constituency association branches?

"The only thing I can answer is the first question you asked me and that's all. No further comments on all your other questions."

Nevertheless, political observers believe there is growing discontent in Martin's constituency due to the level of representation he has provided as the parliamentary representative; even DLP supporters have been demanding change.

"We just need to have him replaced and we have indicated that to the Prime Minister also," a DLP supporter stated.
