I write in response to the Commentary cited in this week's edition of THE SUN newspaper.

This was an excellent piece with which I agree wholeheartedly. I understand from certain aid workers that routine maintenance of safety measures, set up decades ago to manage river flow, were long since abandoned. These protections were a matter of life and death and therefore Dominica has experienced needless loss of life during the recent comparatively mild storm.

This is negligence on the part of governments and the very least that could be done is to accept all International assistance on offer to rebuild the infrastructure. The International community are well advanced in building roads and bridges that can withstand immense pressures. This is crucial as I understand that Dominica does not have these skills.

To THE SUN, keep up the good reporting.
