She won by more than 700 votes.

A preliminary count of the votes in the poll held today shows that Charles received 1342 votes and Hidges "Higgs" Adams of the United Workers Party (UWP) 560.

The following are the votes earned by the parties from the major communities in the constituency.

Scottshead: DLP-360; UWP-168

Just after the results were announced, at about 6.45 pm today, Charles told the press that her first task as parliamentary representative will be to meet with the major groups to prioritise their needs.

When asked she did not say what would be her preference for a ministry in the Roosevelt Skerrit cabinet.

Her supports are celebrating in Soufriere this evening.
