UWI's Celebration of Magna Carta

The University of the West Indies (UWI) St. Augustine's Political Science Department and the UWI Open Campus Dominica is celebrating the 800th Anniversary of the Magna Carta.

During this event, Sir. Dr. Brian Alleyne will present the Distinguished Lecture on the topic: "The Magna Carta and its Influence on Human Rights in Dominica." The event takes place on January 9, 2015 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

As part of the programme there's a panel discussion on various aspects of human rights to be led by Gelina Fontaine of ChildFund Dominica, Thomas Holmes of CARIMAN and Claude Weekes, Inspector of Police.

The Magna Carta was a powerful, iconic document signed by King John of Britain on June 15, 1215 which promised protection of Church rights, preservation from illegal imprisonment, and access to swift justice.

Today, Magna Carta symbolizes political responsibility for the defense of global human rights.
