Dominica Electrical Services Company Limited (DOMLEC) has donated $60,000 towards the successful staging of Mas Domnik 2016.

The company presented cheques to several carnival groups and events on January 25, at the company's conference room in Fond Cole.

The groups and events which benefitted from the contribution from DOMLEC are: Afro Culture Stilt Walkers, Stardom Tent, Portsmouth Town Council, Thunderbirds Band, St Mark's New Vision Steel Band, Roseau Valley Enhancement Committee, Leo Club, Rotaract Club, Dominica Air and Sea Port Authority (DASPA) Calypso Show and Rotary Souse and Punch Party.

"We at DOMLEC we take great pride in being able to contribute to what is Dominican and in uplifting our Dominican people and we are pleased to help support and develop Dominica's carnival," said DOMLEC's Public Relations Officer (PRO) Adina Bellot Valentine

She noted that DOMLEC is aware of the economic situation in the country; however, the company have not strayed from their corporate responsibility in giving back to the island's culture.

"We received so many request…it is a difficult task in deciding which of the entities to go with. It is impossible to service all the requests that we have in our possession," she said.

She noted that among those receiving sponsorship are the traditional bands the company is accustomed of sponsoring but will be additional groups and events.

Valentine said that this is being done in order to 'spread the bread' and give each participating group the opportunity to shine for Mas Domnik 2016.

Unfortunately, she said, DOMLEC will not sponsor a Carnival queen contestant this year; the company most recent sponsorship of a queen contestant was four years ago.

She said that the company believes that providing financial assistance to more than one organization will be more beneficial to the island's culture.

Meanwhile, Member of the Roseau Valley Enhancement Committee Ronald Charles said thanks to DOMLEC for the sponsorship of the Roseau Valley Unity Jouvert Glow Band.

"It is not easy and I know it is not easy for the corporate sponsors to be able to put those funds together to be able to assist," he said
