Judge fines two for causing injury

Two men were fined and ordered to pay compensation amounting to $30,000 when they appeared before trial judge Justice Veronica Charles-Clarke at the Roseau High Court on Thursday May, 2019 for wounding offences.

Portsmouth man to pay $20,000

Justice Charles-Clarke fined Deon Gadier, a 25-year old man of Portsmouth $5,000 and ordered compensation to Augustus Gilbert of Zicack, Portsmouth in the sum of $15,000.

Earlier a jury of five women and four men found Gadier guilty of the offence of causing grievous bodily harm (GBH) to Augustus Gilbert at the end of his trial before Justice Clarke at the Roseau High Court on Monday February 25, 2019.

Justice Charles-Clarke fined Gadier $5,000 to be paid in three months or to imprisonment for 12 months in default. She ordered compensation of $15,000 with $5,000 to be paid forthwith or to 12 months in prison in default, while the balance would be paid by the 30th day of each month in 10 months. Defaulting would result in 12 months in prison.

$10,000 for causing GBH

Additionally, 26 year old Malory Jean Dover of Pointe Michel was fined $5,000 and another $5,000 to be paid in compensation to Fabian Constance, male adult of the same community for unlawfully and maliciously causing grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent to do grievous bodily harm to the virtual complainant.

That was the sentence of resident judge Justice Charles-Clarke at the Roseau High Court on Friday May 3, 2019. Earlier, a jury of seven women and two men found Dover guilty of the charge at the end of a five-day trial on Friday March 22, 2019.

Justice-Clarke fined Dover $5,000 to be paid in three months or in default to two years in prison. He was also to pay compensation in the sum of $5,000 with $2,000 to be paid forthwith and the balance to be paid by the end of June, and in breach he would be liable to two years in prison.

The judge told Dover that he was a young man with a young family and that if he did not change his manner he could find himself spending more time at Stock Farm and missing his children's birthdays. He needed to change.
